Sunday morning was a hot one; but the forecast had a 20% chance of rain. By the time the first lites practice hit the track it was a blazing 98 degrees with the humidity sitting around 85%. The boys were
finding as much shade as they could in staging; trying to keep as cool as possible be for their practice. Ryan Villipoto once again had the fasted lap time giving him the top gate pick. Not only did he have the fastest lap time he was able to shave off 2 seconds of his fastest lap in Saturday practice. Ryan Dungey held onto his second fastest lap time by turning a 1:59.5 lap time, one second slower than Villipoto's. A second behind Dungey was Austin Stroupe who also look strong turning a second faster lap's on Sunday.
In the 450 class Stewart laid it down turning a 1:56.5 laptime a whole 2.5 second faster than Davi Millsaps. Millsaps and Andrew Short both ran 1:59 laps times to give them second and third gate pick. Mike Allessi fell in just behind the two Honda boys.
After the big boys second practice it was time for the ladies to take the track for their second moto. With Fiolek and Patterson's battle in the first moto it was bound to be another great race. When the gate dropped and the mob of girls raced to the holeshot line it was once again Fiolek collecting the check. Patterson was sitting on forth but made quick work of the two in front of her to move into 2 nd . She got on the rear wheel of Fiolek just like she did in moto one and put all the pressure in the world on Fiolek. Patterson was putting a wheel on Fiolek in every corner trying to push her into a mistake. The two of them checked out from the rest of the pack and battled until Patterson pushed it a little to much and hit the ground; she was not able to get back up and going again to stay inside the top 10 she finished up 18th for 9 th overall. Fiolek held on to her big lead to take her second straight overall in as many races. The battle for the lead was not the only one on the track; 3rd through 9th had a great battle going on. Casuandra Reagal was holding down the 3rd spot in the early going, but could not
hold off Sarah Whitmore. Whitmore made the pass for 3rd and started pulling away from the pack. Reagal had more company from Tatum Sik who had her own troubles early on; she was already riding with a banged up shoulder from going down hard in moto 1. Things got worse for Sik as she was not able to jump a jump and Katie Mcguire landed on her “good shoulder” and banged it up good as well. Sik put her pain to the side and put her head down putting the charge on Reagal; she put the pass on Reagal for 3rd and began chipping away at Whitmore's lead. Sik was not able to get close enough to set up a pass on Whitmore, but she beard down and rode her heart out all banged up. Mariana Balbi was the last to get around Reagal> Balbi found herself on the podium with her 5-4 performance.
After the dust settled from the women's moto it was time for moto one of the lites class. The Monster Energy Pro Circuit boys (Villipoto and Stroupe) shot out of the gate and got out to the early lead. Villipoto was on the gas and showed the rest of the boys how to get around the track it Freestone. He was by far the fastest on the track and in the best shape, he was able to push the whole 30 minutes plus 2 laps. It was 103 degrees with 90% humidity; it did not bother Villipoto much as he was cool and collected the whole time. Stroupe had his hands full with Ryan Dungey the two of them had a great battle going until Stroupe hit a little wall and started falling back a little each lap from Dungey. In moto 2
it was the KTM boys jumping out to the early lead. Martin Davalos fresh off of a injury found himself out front he had fellow KTM pilots Ryan Sipes and Matt Goerke on tow. Davalos has not been on the bike to long and was not able to keep the pace of the leaders and dropped way back. The other KTM boys held tough and stayed up with the top runners for a number of laps; but it was Stroupe and Dungey taking over the top two spots. Villipoto did not get the best of starts and found himself carving through riders; things were going his way until he made a mistake and took a soil sample of the Texas sand. He regrouped and started plugging away again; with Stroupe and Dungey hammering on each other out front. The two youngsters went back and fourth a number of times but it was Dungey getting the best of Stroupe. The day was not over for Villipoto though as he dug deep and once again started picking people off and found himself on the heals of team mate Stroupe. It then was a three way battle for the lead with Villipoto getting the best of both Stroupe and Dungey. He pushed his way into the lead and was able to check out from the rest of the pack. Nobody had anything for Villipoto this weekend; he was on a mission and showed that the heat has nothing on him. Villipoto is all business and is ready for the rest of the season to capture his last lites title.
It was the same old story in the 450 class, James Stewart. Alessi jumped out front with the holeshot and the early lead. Stewart did not get off to the start he would have liked to but quickly moved into second behind Alessi. He made quick work of Alessi but was not able to keep it as his front wheel washed out and he took a little spill losing a few positions. Stewart got back on his KX 450f and put his head down pushing all the way back to the real wheel of Alessi. He made his way around Alessi once again but made it stick this time. He was able to check out from Alessi and the rest of the pack. Alessi was able to find his own pace and settled into 2 nd ; Andrew Short put in a good ride behind Alessi to finish in the 3 rd spot. The rider on the move though was Timmy Ferry who received the Ricky Carmichael hard charger award, as he worked his way from outside the top 20 all the way to 7th . When the gate dropped for moto 2 it was once again Mike Alessi's Suzuki jumping out front with the holeshot, he had nothing for Stewart in moto 2 as the #7 bike made his way into the lead and checked out. Alessi rode his own race in second and pushed all the way to the finish. Millsaps was sitting in 3 rd until the Red Dog Timmy Ferry came from behind and stole it from him. Ferry was really on the gas and showed that he is going to be a real threat all year long.
Our PanicRev support riders were led by Tatum Sik, she got banged up (as you read above) early on, but she pulled it together and stay positive. All of the prayers were answered for her as she gave it her all in the second moto to finish 3rd. Sean Borkenhagen put out his best effort and was able to get into the top 20 in the second moto finishing up 22 nd overall with is 22-18 moto finishes. Kyle Partridge was one of three 450 riders that supports PanicRev; he was on the gas early on in moto 1 and finished 22nd . Kevin Rookstool was also looking good finishing up 27th ; Jarred Browne is the final rider. Jarred has shown flashes of his old self, but just has not been able to put it all together quite yet. Browne finished 35th in moto 1; a breakout is right around the corner for Browne and look out when it happens. All of these riders are looking to better there finishes each and every week.
